"I'm sorry. I wanted to talk before you met them. You should know my parents aren’t…good at parenting. They do this all the time." Craig wrung his hands together and looked down to his right even as he stood in front of Zad.

Zad put a finger under Craig's chin and lifted it. Craig bit his bottom lip and his brow furrowed. "You're a good older brother."

"I’m more to them than just their older brother. I’m the oldest. I have responsibilities." Craig’s shyness from earlier left and the message was evident in the hard press of his pretty lips.

"You’ve mentioned that before."

“I’m the only one they can count on.” Craig looked over at two of his brothers who had just started shoving each other. He pointed to each one of them with his eyebrows raised and a commanding look on his face. "Clean. Now. And you can take that outside after."

Both boys stopped immediately and continued picking up the trash around the coffee table. One boy glared at the other and shoved him. The other opened his mouth to say something, but Craig cut him off. "Not a word."

The boy sighed but otherwise did as Craig demanded.

Craig turned back to him. "Sorry."

"Don't apologize." Zad leaned down and kissed Craig on the lips. He intended to keep it to just a press of the lips, but Craig opened up, allowing Zad to take more than he intended. Craig’s eagerness came through when his arms held Zad around his shoulders. Zad held him around the waist, lifting him until he stood on tiptoes.

Craig tilted his head when the kiss grew more demanding.

It was when some small person pressed against his leg that Zad came back to himself. He broke the kiss and looked down. The little girl Craig had held earlier leaned against both of them with her thumb in her mouth.

"Why aren't you helping, Samantha Jane?"

She pulled her thumb out with a pop and met Craig's gaze. "Joe's yelling."

"Did you help make the mess?"

"Yes. But I'm little."

Craig pursed his lips and rolled his eyes all at once. And then his lips turned up into a smile as if he found the little girl cute but didn’t want to let her know it. "Pick up the sandwich you dropped and the plate."

"That's Luke's."

Craig's eyes narrowed, and that seemed to be the only thing he had to do because the girl moved away from them and did what Craig told her.

Craig took a deep breath and met Zad's gaze. "She gets away with too much. Youngest child syndrome."

“I can see why she might get her way.” Samantha Jane had a sweet, innocent face and big brown eyes that would cut deep if turned on Zad. He wouldn’t be able to reprimand the girl if he had to and didn’t understand how Craig resisted her cute charm so easily. "You're good with them. You have their respect."

"Thank you."

"Do your parents have it?"

"My parents are...emotionally absent."

Zad got the impression Craig put that statement as nicely as he could.
